Once again, I am in danger of gushing too enthusiastically about the opportunity in one of the loveliest regions in the country; I’m always in danger of losing credibility, but I’m certain some applicants will love Southern Oregon.
There are really three significant reasons to consider Southern Oregon (SOU) very seriously.
- SOU is located in Ashland, Oregon.
- SOU is one of two Public Liberal Arts Universities in the West.
- SOU is the only place I know that has a department of Shakespeare Studies with the opportunity to intern with a professional theater.
Ashland is one of the most scenic, charming, welcoming, enchanting small cities in the Pacific Northwest.
Many people know Ashland as the home of the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, perhaps the most successful repertory theater in the United States. The Festival runs from March through November, attracting audiences from across the country and around the world. An elegant Shakespearean theater presents under the sky/stars, a modern large-scale theater offers elaborate sets and special effects, and a nifty Black Box theater allows the presentation of theater in the round. No longer strictly a Shakespearean company, the OSF produces contemporary dramas, rollicking musicals, adaptations of novels and films, plays in translation, and classic works as well.
Hordes of playgoers need restaurants, coffee shops, shops, boutiques, and hotels, and Ashland provides them all. The city’s amenities are not seasonal, however, because Ashland enjoys a spectacular autumn show of colors and excellent vineyards, attracting an entirely different population as it does in the winter and spring.
As the first snows fall, skiers arrive to enjoy the well -groomed runs on Mount Ashland, operating at almost eight thousand feet. Outdoor adventures also include some of the best river rafting and fishing in the region as the Rogue River courses south from Grant’s Pass. Hikers climb down from the Pacific Crest Trail that runs right through Mount Ashland’s Alpine meadows. Outdoor Magazine names Ashland one of the premiere locations for variety of outdoor opportunities.
