It suddenly struck me that there is a group of colleges profiled in America’s Best Kept College Secrets that are no secret at all to counselors and families in their region. These are colleges that enroll from outside their own state but within a particular section of the country.
In the Northeast, for example, many families will at least recognize-
U. Vermont, Bennington, Hampshire, Clark, WPI, Wheaton, Eugene Lang, Hobart and William Smith.
In the Middle Atlantic Region and Virginia, these colleges are familiar to most college bound families –
Drew, Goucher, Sweet Briar, Hollins, and Hampden-Sydney
In the South, most counselors are well aware of –
Furman, Eckerd, Rollins, Sewanee, Rhodes, Centre, Hendrix, and Trinity University
Midwesterners from Iowa to Ohio know –
Case Western, College of Wooster, Earlham, Depauw, Lake Forest, Kalamazoo, Lawrence, Coe, and Saint Olaf
On the west coast, basketball has brought attention to –
Loyola Marymount, Santa Clara, Saint Mary’s, and Gonzaga
While in the Pacific Northwest, most will have heard of –
Lewis and Clark and Willamette.
My hope, of course, is that America’s Best Kept College Secrets will bring these great options to the attention of folks from regions beyond their own. Oh, and by the way, there are another 120 colleges and university that are every bit as interesting and yet not considered widely enough…yet!
