Anyone caught up in March Madness has had to deal with a flurry (as it were) of unheralded mascots… so … in the spirit of `mascot-mania, a new catalog!

University of Iowa – Hawkeyes (Started out as a character in James Fennimore Cooper’s

Last of the Mohicans, then applied to pioneers in Iowa – go figure!

California Maritime – Keelhaulers (OK, you won’t believe this.  Keelhauling is a form

of punishment by which a sailor is tied to a rope and thrown UNDER the ship (keel)

and then dragged underwater until the lesson is learned)

Slavic military band and fictional water beasts?)

On the other hand, I have no idea who/what the purple thing is

and why the cow is apparently overjoyed at its distress.

1898, called Boxer as a tip of the hat to the Boxer Rebellion.  Huh?)

– the real Geoducks can’t even fit in its own shell!)
